Immigration

Immigration

Immigrants are the backbone of America’s prosperity and innovation. In Northern Virginia, they play indispensable roles in strengthening our region’s economy. Currently, nearly 3 out of 10 Northern Virginia residents are immigrants. Despite being productive members of our community and communities across the nation, immigrants have faced the combined challenges of COVID-19 and the traumatizing fallout of ICE raids. My mother is a first generation immigrant and, If we go back far enough, every family who is not indigenous to this nation was at one time an immigrant. Therefore, we must:

  • Treat newcomers with dignity and ‘lift our lamp’ to welcome them
  • Abolish ICE and replace it with a humane immigration system
  • Enact DACA as federal law, removing it from the Executive Order
  • Pass FIRST Act to help those detained in ICE custody during health emergencies
  • Reduce the cost of immigration including the administrative barriers to naturalization
  • Hire more immigration judges to ensure an efficient process
  • Grant the option of full citizenship for any who serves in our armed forces
